PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Trail Blazers radio voice Brian Wheeler is taking a personal leave of absence, the organization announced Thursday.
No timeline has been set for Wheeler’s return.
Jason Quick of NBC Sports Northwest reported that Wheeler will miss the Blazers’ preseason finale on Friday and at least the first three games of the regular season while he battles scrotal lymphedema. Wheeler missed four games in November of 2013 due to the condition.
“Nothing pains me more than to be away from this Trail Blazers team and our amazing fans,” said Wheeler in a news release from the Blazers. “I’m appreciative of the organization’s belief in my talent as a broadcaster, and for their understanding of my need to manage these personal matters. I look forward to returning to the microphone very soon.”
The Blazers announced that longtime Portland broadcaster Scott Lynn will take over radio play-by-play duties for the team’s first road trip. Lynn last appeared on Trail Blazers radio broadcasts in 2013.
“This was a difficult decision for Brian, but one that we agreed was in his best interest,” said Blazers President and CEO Chris McGowan. “We support Brian and wish him well, and look forward to his return.”
Wheeler is one of the longest-tenured radio broadcasters in the NBA. This season will be Wheeler’s 20th calling games for the Blazers.
