Oregon high school spring sports canceled for the rest of the year

Staying aligned with the governor, the OSAA canceled the rest of the spring season to limit the spread of COVID-19.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Following Gov. Kate Brown’s announcement on Wednesday that in-person classes were canceled for the rest of the academic year, the organization that oversees high school sports has also canceled the spring season.

The Oregon School Activities Association had previously canceled sports and activities through April 28, aligning with Gov. Brown’s previous closure of the state’s schools. And staying aligned with the governor, the OSAA on Wednesday canceled the rest of the spring season to limit the spread of COVID-19.

“Today’s heart wrenching decision is difficult for all members of the OSAA family,” said Peter Weber, OSAA executive director. “We empathize with students and school communities, especially our graduating seniors, but recognize that these cancellations will allow our collective focus to remain where it’s most needed at this time - on the health and safety of all Oregonians.”

In March, the coronavirus pandemic prompted the OSAA to cancel the state high school basketball and dance/drill competitions.

Current OSAA policies prohibiting the use of school facilities and coaches from organizing or directing workouts and practices remain in effect until further notice. The OSAA Executive Board will meet in the coming weeks to discuss policies for summer activities, along with academic eligibility concerns for fall 2020.

You can visit the OSAA's website for more information about how the organization is handling the pandemic.
