SALEM -- AWorld War II bazooka training shell was unearthed by a road crew in Salem Tuesday.

MarionCounty deputies said traffic was blocked on Howell Prairie Road Southeast after a public works employee found what appeared to be a military projectile just before 2 p.m.

A supervisor identified it as an early WW II bazooka projectile.

Specialists from Oregon Army National Guard identified it as a 3.5-inch inert training round.

Also referred to as the Stovepipe, the bazooka was one of the first-generation of rocket propelled anti-tank weapons used in combat, deputies said.

No one was hurt.

Parents were cautioned to remind children to report to a parent, school official or law enforcement officer anything suspicious that is thought to be a weapon or ammunition.
