VANCOUVER --A woman was run over and killed by a C-Tran bus in downtown Vancouver Friday, police said.
The crash was reported just before 11:30 a.m. at W 8th Street and Washington Street, according to Kim Kapp with the Vancouver Police Department.
Crews at the scene asked for a heavy rescue unit to get the victim out from under the bus. When paramedics gained access underneath the bus they found the woman had died.
The driver was identified as 17-year C-Tran veteran Al Purvis. He was put on paid administrative leave and was scheduled to undergo alcohol and drug testing, according to C-Tran's Jim Quintana.
C-Tran is very saddened by what happened, Quintana told KGW. He added that the company hadn't been involved in a fatality since 2002.
Preliminary information from traffic investigators showed the bus had been turning left at an intersection when it struck the woman in a crosswalk, Kapp said.
Police had not determined whether the walk signal was lit at the time.
Vancouver police were investigating.
