PORTLAND -- A candlelight vigil began at 5:30 p.m. outside the Clackamas Town Center to honor the victims and heroes of the mall shooting one year after the tragedy.
On Dec. 11, 2012, a 22-year-old man started shooting wildly inside the packed mall, killing two people and wounding a third. Then he killed himself.
The theme of Wednesday's vigil was Remembrance and Resolve. It included talks by family members of the victims and clergy members, a musical performance and a moment of silence.
We never thought something like this would happen to our family, said Jenna Passalacqua, daughter of Cindy Yuille. Now we're faced with going on without her.
In the days following the shooting, memorial stars were hung inside the mall. Those stars have since been removed, organized and given to the victims' families. Copies of memory books were also made and given to the families, according to a mall spokesperson.
Steve Forsyth was working at a kiosk inside the mall and Cindy Yuille was doing her holiday shopping when they were shot to death. Kristina Shevchenko, just 15 years old at the time, was seriously wounded but survived.
Steve was a big guy, said PaulKemp, Steve's brother-in-law. The way he lived his life matched his stature.
Authorities said Jacob Tyler Roberts used a stolen semi-automatic AR-15 rifle in the rampage.
There were about 10,000 people inside the mall when he opened fire.
