PORTLAND -- An iconic bronze statue of former Mayor Vera Katz along Portland s Eastbank Esplanade has been removed - but it will return.
The statue was taken to another location for minor repairs and upkeep.
Portland Parks spokeswoman Beth Sorensen described the procedure to KGW as spa work and expects her to be back in three to six weeks.
A sign will be placed at the statue site explaining why Mayor Katz is missing, Sorensen said.
The missing statue created an eruption of rumors created by a tweet to Mayor Sam Adams asking why it was gone, leading to speculation that it had been stolen.
Adams was chief of staff to Katz for a decade.
The Katz statue is part of the public arts program and the repair work was being coordinated by the Regional Arts &Culture Council.
The statue has been a popular spot for visitors to take photos next to the bronzed former mayor.
