Sex abuse case against soccer coach dismissed

The trial of a club soccer coach ended Friday when sex abuse charges against him were dismissed.

OREGON CITY, Ore. – The trial of a club soccer coach ended Friday when sex abuse charges against him were dismissed.

The case against Joseph Leonetti was "dismissed based on newly discovered evidence and in the best interest of justice," Circuit Judge Kathie Steele's clerk told KGW.

The newly discovered evidence was not disclosed.

Leonetti was arrested and accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl on his club soccer team in 2013.

Leonetti has a lengthy history of coaching girls soccer, including coaching the West Linn High School Girls soccer team from 1997 to 2006.

Leonetti played soccer at the University of Portland where he was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2001. In 1996, he was drafted by the LA Galaxy 94th overall in the MLS Inaugural Player Draft. He also appeared as a soccer analyst on KPTV during Portland Timbers games.
