PORTLAND, Ore. -- A North Portland High School is getting some major help.

Roosevelt High on N. Central Street was awarded $7.7 million in a federal grant, Portland Public School officials said Wednesday. In all, 12 school recieved $34.4 million.

Superintendent Carole Smith and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Susan Castillo said the federal government had made the million funding available to the school as part of the School Improvement Grants program from the U.S. Department of Education.

Today marks an important milestone in our work to close the persistent achievement gap that exists in our lowest-achieving schools, Castillo said. Our students deserve dramatic improvements that will lead to better education outcomes. Each of these schools have committed to making serious changes in their education programs. Their courage to make the hard choices necessary for their students will serve as a model of reform for our state in years to come.

Awards were based on reading and math scores, their Adequate Yearly Progress status as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act and graduation rates.
