Homes evacuated in Hazel Dell area due to major gas leak

Natural gas odors were reported as far as 11 blocks away from the Columbia River High School area.

PORTLAND, Ore. — At least 10 homes were evacuated due to a major gas leak in front of Columbia River High School in the Hazel Dell area of Clark County. No injuries have been reported, and things appear to be back to normal as of Thursday evening.

Natural gas odors were reported as far as 11 blocks away, according to Clark County Fire District 6.

99th Street, a major arterial in Lake Shore and Felida neighborhood, was closed during the evening rush hour, Clark County Fire District 6 said, adding that they would stay on the scene until traffic was reestablished.

Early reports point towards the leak happening after a contractor working on a water line project accidentally punctured a major gas line at around 4:03 p.m., fire officials said.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
