PORTLAND, Ore. — New research shows one tactic may work best when it comes to getting kids to try new foods - getting them involved in the cooking process.

Ali Collins went to culinary school and teaches cooking to kids, but even she has trouble getting her own kids to expand their plates.

Developmental psychologists had 64 kids aged 5 to 7 years old make their own salads or desserts. They offered them a choice between the food they made or a similar item that was already cooked.

"If they made the salad, they ate more of the salad that they personally made, as opposed to a different salad," Dr. Jasmine DeJesus said.

She said having your child help prepare the food can influence what they eat.

For example, tacos are a great way to get your kids involved. Kids can choose what protein they want to eat, then sprinkle cheese, lettuce and vegetables on top.

You should start small with something like a salad. Have your child put dressing on lettuce so they feel invested, and remember to budget extra time for prep.

"Don't try to do this on a weeknight when everyone's stressed and busy and you just want to get food on the table," Dr. DeJesus said.
