PORTLAND Rose City icon Bob Miller hosted his last radio show Friday morning in front of a live crowd of hundreds of people.

Friends, family, co-workers and loyal listeners filled the Oaks Park Pavilion to hear his emotional goodbye.

I definitely want to thank my listeners, he told the crowd. These are the people that keep you employed, and they have through all these years. And we've been through a lot together.

Miller started as a DJ in 1979. He then worked his way up to morning show host on several Portland stations, including AM 860 KPAM. Along the way he said he built a strong bond with his fans.

The highest compliment you can be paid is a listener, he said. Someone that just listens to you on the radio and says, You feel like a part of our family. And that is a major, huge compliment.

Miller said he decided this was his year to retire. He said he and his wife plan to travel, scuba dive and golf. But he added the one thing he looks forward to most is sleeping in.
