PORTLAND -- After more than 40 years in Portland news, anchor and journalist Mike Donahue has announced he's retiring.

Donahue joined KOIN-TV in 1968, at 22 years old. He plans to retire from the station in May 31.

He wrote a letter to his colleagues and fans to share his decision.

Ending a rewarding career after more than 40 years leaves me still wanting more, he wrote. Like reaching the end of a good book or movie, you don't want to close the cover or leave the theater. But, I must. It's time to retire.

He said it's been a thrilling ride. He's pursued the news in Europe, Asia and Africa, and followed some of the most exciting stories of the last half-century.

I helped expose the Rajneeshies, searched for D.B. Cooper and chased the New Carissa up the coast, he wrote. The eruption of Mt, St. Helens was the biggest local news story of my career.

But he said it's the people he will miss the most: the colleagues who have made it fun and the captivating people who have been the subjects of his countless stories.
