Live, updated results for the top 2023 general election races in Washington state

Keep up with the key races and measures during Washington state's 2023 general election.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — An initial round of 2023 general election returns was released shortly on Nov. 7 in Washington.

The returns are from ballots that were turned in early and tabulated. Counties will release additional results in the days after the election as more ballots are counted. Additional results are typically released daily.

KING 5 will provide live updates as returns are counted.

Seattle City Council

This year’s election is for the seven district seats and does not include the two citywide seats held by Councilmember Sara Nelson and Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda.

The council members trying to keep their seats this year are Tammy Morales (District 2), Dan Strauss (District 6), and Andrew Lewis (District 7).

Councilmembers Kshama Sawant (District 3), Alex Pedersen (District 4), Debora Juarez (District 5), and Lisa Herbold (District 1) are all not seeking reelection.

Seattle - Affordable Housing Levy

If approved, the 2023 Seattle Housing Levy will mean homeowners will pay $970 million over seven years. The average homeowner in Seattle would pay an additional $383 a year, or $32 a month, on a home with an assessed value of $855,136, according to the Office of the Seattle City Council.

The City of Seattle said the levy would create more than 3,100 affordable homes, assist 9,000 low-income families, support workers of affordable complexes, and help prevent the displacement of families.

Tacoma - Initiative 1, tenant protections

If passed, Initiative 1 would require landlords to provide relocation assistance, set limits on rental fees, and prevent evictions for certain groups during the winter months.

King County Council

Two contested King County Council races are on the ballot, along with two unopposed races.

Jorge L. Barón and Sarah Reyneveld are running to represent District 4.

Current Seattle City Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda and Mayor of Burien Sofia Aragon are running to represent District 8

Snohomish County sheriff

Incumbent Adam Fortney is being challenged by Bothell Police Department Deputy Chief Susanna Johnson.

Fortney rose through the ranks as a graveyard patrol sergeant to become sheriff four years ago.

Johnson spent 30 years with the sheriff's office only to retire quite briefly before joining the Bothell Police Department.

Snohomish County executive

Dave Somers is seeking to serve his second term as Snohomish County executive. Somers previously served on the Snohomish County Council from 1998-2002 and again from 2006-2015.

Somers, a Democrat, received 52% of the vote in the primary election to advance, while challenger Bob Hagglund, a Republican, received 37% of the vote.

County canvassing boards will certify and transmit election results by Nov. 28.

The last day for the secretary of state to certify the primary election results is Dec. 7.
