Kate Brown vs. Bud Pierce

Results: Kate Brown has been elected to a two-year term as Oregon Governor, besting Republican challenger Bud Pierce.

"I will fight to make sure that our schools open the doors of opportunity for all of our students," she said in a speech Tuesday night. "I will fight to make sure that our economy grows in every single corner of the state and I will fight to preserve the beauty and bounty of Oregon for generations to come."

Pierce said he wanted to win, but was at peace with the results.

"I would have been very happy if I would have won of course," he said. "I like how the campaign was conducted. I respect the people of Oregon. I wish they would have chosen me, but I'm 100-percent okay with that."

Democrat Kate Brown took over as governor following John Kitzhaber’s resignation in early 2015. She faced challenger Dr. Bud Pierce in the contest to finish what would have been the last two years of Kitzhaber’s term, from Jan. 1, 2017 – Jan. 1, 2019.

Brown is the first openly LGBT governor to be elected in the U.S.
