PORTLAND, Ore. -- Oregon State University announced on Tuesday that police arrested a man for making violent threats against the university on social media.
Christopher Adam Strahan, 22, faces one count of first-degree disorderly conduct. He was arrested outside a residence in Corvallis.
Strahan is a former OSU student. He left the university as a junior in 2017, according to Steve Clark with OSU.
Court records show Strahan made similar threats against OSU in 2017 and was arrested for disorderly conduct.
Earlier Tuesday, OSU announced on Twitter that officials were aware of and were investigating "concerning tweets," but the lack of clarity in that statement left many of the account's followers uneasy.
"When you send out tweets like this with no info on the event," one alum tweeted in response. "You make people more nervous, scared and fearful. We are not relaxed. Info?"
"I am truly speechless," said another. "Who thought communicating about this vaguely and through a medium that doesn't reach the entire school population was effective?"
The school also sent the following note to students and staff with a bit more information:
Oregon State Police and other law enforcement officials are investigating social media posts that were being made today by one individual threatening violence at Oregon State’s University’s Corvallis campus. Further communications will be made by the university as more information becomes available. At all times, we encourage students, faculty, staff and guests to report any safety concerns to OSU Public Safety by calling 541-737-7000.
Police confirmed the threats came from Strahan, who used the Twitter handle @hardbellydorm, and said, "Oregon State University campus going to get shot up and who will be to blame," and, "You motherfuckers are past spent, you motherfuckers are going to die in class."
Oregon State Police said they received an anonymous tip about the threats on the statewide school tip line, SafeOregon.
The university announced just after 3 p.m. Tuesday that someone had been arrested in connection with the threats.
