One of the very first projects to breathe new life into the historic Slabtown district of Northwest Portland officially opens its doors this morning.
New Seasons Market's 17th store planned to welcome neighborhood shoppers beginning at 8 a.m. today. The 28,000-square-foot space, located at 2170 N.W. Raleigh St. and designed by GBD Architects, Holst Architecture and LRS Architects, is an adaptive reuse of a 1950s warehouse.
The store is also part of the larger $46 million Slabtown Marketplace development, which is itself part of the much larger Con-way Master Plan redevelopment underway in the neighborhood. Slabtown Marketplace, which is being developed by Cairn Pacific LLC and Capstone Partners, includes the New Seasons and also a six-story mixed-use apartment building with 113 units called the L.L. Hawkins.
The latter building is currently under construction and expected to complete later this year.
"We have been looking forward to becoming a part of this community for a long time, and we hope our new neighbors feel the same," said New Seasons' president and CEO Wendy Collie. "Our hope is that this store will become a gathering place where everyone feels welcome. Slabtown is a strong part of Portland's past, and we're proud to be part of its future."
New Seasons' newest store, which will create 138 jobs, will include a 12-seat wine bar, a ramen bar, a hot wok bar, sandwich shop, a grab-and-go case and a new Latin American grill.
The store is New Seasons' first location to become Green Globes Certified, recognizing energy conservation, lowered water consumption and responsible use of materials.
Another project slated for the immediate neighborhood is a huge remodel by Capstone Partners and Cairn Pacific that will deliver more than 113,300 square feet of rentable office and retail space to the area by late next summer. The remodel is of an four-story Con-way office building at 1621 N.W. 21st Ave.
Plans include a full renovation, taking the old building down to its structural steel and reconstructing the exterior, installing new mechanical and electrical systems and creating restaurant and retail spaces on the main floor below office floors. There will also be underground parking.
