DETROIT — Michigan politician Matt Maddock caused quite the stir online Wednesday when he posted a tweet with pictures of buses and a plane at the Detroit Airport. The tweet said, “Happening right now. Three busses just loaded up with illegal invaders at Detroit Metro. Anyone have any idea where they’re headed with their police escort?”
However, a spokesperson from the Detroit Metro Airport confirmed the buses seen in the tweet were transporting NCAA basketball teams and their staffs.
The full statement from the airport said, “The four men’s basketball teams competing in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 at Little Caesars Arena arrived at DTW Wednesday evening. The buses seen in a photograph circulating online were transporting the basketball teams and their respective staffs.”
A community note on the original tweet says the buses and police escort were for the Gonzaga University men’s basketball team. However, the university did not confirm it was them. The university says they can’t solidly say it was their team, but they did fly an Allegiant plane, but so did a few other teams.
Gonzaga is in Detroit to take on Purdue in a Sweet 16 matchup at 4:39 on Friday.
