MULTNOMAH FALLS, Ore. -- The iconic Benson Bridge at Multnomah Falls will remain closed while engineers evaluate how to repair the damage cause when a rock fell on it, a forest service official said Friday.

The rock hit the bridge Thursday, leaving a three-foot hole in the bridge and knocking out part of the cement railing.

Structural engineers Friday morning said there was no damage to the bridge's superstructure, which is good news, said Stan Hinatsu of the U.S. Forest Service. But he it might not reopen to visitors until Memorial Day.

The bridge will remain closed while engineers work to come up with a repair plan. Larch Mountain trail will also be closed from the viewing plaza near Multnomah Falls Lodge to the Gorge #400 trail, Hinatsu said.
