Man shot by Mt. Angel police identified

One person was shot late Wednesday afternoon by a Mount Angel police officer following a high-speed chase.

MT. ANGEL -- One person was shot late Wednesday afternoon by a Mount Angel police officer following a high-speed chase.

On Thursday, police identified the suspect who was shot as Lloyd Schafer, 38, of Salem.

Investigators said the incident began when officers tried to pull Schafer over for a traffic violation.

Just before 4 p.m. , witnesses reported a chase through downtown that ended near South Sheridan and Church Street.

It (a blue truck) just goes screaming on past us, said Joseph Zeis.

Zeis said he heard two gunshots after the truck turned the corner. Cameron Jacobson, 13, also heard the commotion.

We have a calm town, said Jacobson. We don't have that much action around here.

Police told KGW a Mount Angel police officer shot the man driving the truck and then Schafer was flown to OregonHealth and Science University inPortland by LifeFlight.

The officer who shot Schafer was identified by police Thursday as Steven McDonough, 28. He has served with the Mt. Angel Police Department for approximately 2 years.

A second officer at the scene was Jeff Charpilloz, 36. He is a 12-year veteran with the Mt. Angel Police Department.

Both Officers have been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation of the shooting.
