Reproductive rights advocates gathered on Burnside Bridge for nationwide Women's Strike

The strike in Portland was part of nationwide events marking two years since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A crowd of people demonstrated on the Burnside Bridge in Portland as part of a nationwide Women's Strike.

People wearing red with signs gathered on the sidewalks of the Burnside Bridge at noon on Monday. Organizers of the strike said they are demanding equality, reproductive freedom and an end to gender-based violence. They also asked participants to abstain from work or school, if they can, for the day. All participants had left the bridge by around 2 p.m.

The Women's Strike comes two years after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case, which overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling. The decision by the court's conservative majority on June 24, 2022 ended nearly 50 years of federally guaranteed access to abortion. In 14 Republican-controlled states, abortion is currently banned at all stages of pregnancy with limited exceptions.

Several other rallies were scheduled around the Portland metro area and Oregon on Monday, including in Tualatin, The Dalles and Grants Pass.
