Fire season is in full swing across California. And while firefighters work diligently to protect homes and structures, there are some things residents can do to help prevent damage on their own property.

The following are tips you can do to help protect your home from the flames:

1. Secure the perimeter of your home.

  • Remove all dead vegetation
  • Clean gutters, trim trees
  • Relocate wood piles
  • Keep grass and plants trimmed short

[within 100 feet of buildings]

  • Cut annual grass down to a maximum of four inches
  • Create space between grass, shrubs, and trees
  • Reduce buildup of dead plan material to three inches

2. Keep embers out by covering vent openings.

3. Properly seal windows and pet doors.

4. Caulk cracks and replace missing roofing.

5. Structures built with nonflammable materials, like asphalt shingles, metal, slate or tile can be key for fire defense.

6. Be in good communication with neighbors.

7. Be aware of local fire regulations and resources.

8. Always have an evacuation plan.
