VANCOUVER, Wash. — The Vancouver Police Department has released video of a deadly police shooting that happened near the waterfront Saturday afternoon where an officer shot and killed a man. The video from police dash and body cameras shows the man point what appears to be a weapon at the officer and his patrol vehicle before the officer fires at him four times.
Two Vancouver police officers involved in the incident were identified Friday morning. The day prior, the Clark County Medical Examiner identified the man who died as 43-year-old Vadim Sashchenko of Vancouver.
Full video released here. Warning: Video is graphic.
Around 1:45 p.m. on June 8, police responded to a report of a man with a German Shepherd that was running loose and had bitten at least one person. Vancouver police had also said the man, Sashchenko, was "described as having a firearm."
Two Vancouver police officers, Brandon Riedel and Stuart Drynan, found Sashchenko and the dog near Columbia Avenue and Columbia Way around 3 p.m. Dash camera video taken from inside Riedel's vehicle shows Sashchenko walking with the dog, and he holds up what appears to be a gun and points it at Riedel and his vehicle.

Officer Riedel fires his gun, and four shots can be heard as video shows Sashchenko then tossing the item in his hand into the street. Sashchenko and the dog then walk out of the frame as Drynan parks and runs out of his patrol vehicle.
Dash camera video simultaneously taken inside Drynan's vehicle shows a different angle of the incident. The man points what appears to be a gun at Riedel and his vehicle, then throws it into the street as four shots are fired. Video shows Sashchenko fall to the ground.
As the officers approached the man to provide medical aid, the dog was behaving aggressively and trying to bite them, Vancouver police said. The officers used a foam baton round to get the dog to move away before trying to provide medical aid to Sashchenko. Sashchenko died at the scene.
The dog "was eventually secured to a dumpster to prevent any further injuries from the dog," Vancouver police previously said, and was taken to the Humane Society.
No officers were injured.
The officer who fired his gun, Riedel, and Drynan are on critical incident leave. Riedel has been with Vancouver police since 2018. Drynan was hired in 2023.
Riedel was previously involved in at least one other deadly shooting. One incident happened in a Safeway parking lot in May 2023 where police shot and killed an armed robbery suspect.
