SKAMANIA COUNTY, Wash. — A 63-year-old hiker from Hillsboro was rescued Friday afternoon after falling almost 300 feet near Dog Mountain Trail in Washington.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office, around 1:30 p.m., received a 911 call about the hiker from the group they were with. The hiker, who has not been identified, had fallen down a steep hillside from a trail near the Dog Mountain summit. The trail has an elevation gain of around 2,900 feet.

County search-and-rescue teams, medical services and Skamania County Fire District One found the hiker "unconscious and unresponsive."

Due to the steep terrain and injuries of the hiker, a U.S. Army medical helicopter was used to recover and hoist the hiker to safety. They were flown to PeaceHealth Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver for their injuries and are currently in stable condition.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office said anyone hiking the nearly 6-mile Dog Mountain Trail should be "properly equipped and know their physical limitations."
