Clothing on body found floating in Washington pond matches that of missing monk

Residents of the nearby Sravasti Abby told investigators that the pond had been frozen over with ice and only recently thawed.

NEWPORT, Wash. — Investigators with the Pend Oreille County Sheriff's Office responded to a location where a resident saw a body floating in a pond.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the deceased male body was found near where a monk was reported missing on November 8, 2023. The sheriff’s said in a press release, “the clothing on the body was consistent with a missing monk.”

Deputies retrieved the body using a canoe from a neighbor. Residents of the nearby Sravasti Abbey told investigators that the pond had been frozen over with ice and only recently thawed.

An extensive weeklong search of the location was held in November when the 64-year-old monk was originally reported missing.

An autopsy was requested by the coroner to determine an estimated time of death and possible cause of death.
