BEAVERTON, Ore. — MAX Blue Line service was disrupted on the western half of the line after a man became stuck in the doors of a moving train near Beaverton Transit Center Thursday morning, according to TriMet. Beaverton police said at 11:20 a.m. that train service through the area was still on hold but would be able to resume soon.
According to a statement from TriMet, the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. While initial reports suggested that it was a collision involving a pedestrian and a train, a spokesperson for the agency later said "that was not the case."
Instead, the man involved had exited the train wearing a long coat. As the doors were closing, he "put the coat into the door at the last minute," TriMet said. As the train began to leave with the man's coat stuck in the door, he was dragged along the platform.
Emergency crews from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue arrived at the station to treat the man, according to a tweet from the agency at about 10:50 a.m., and he was then transported to a local trauma center by AMR. A Beaverton police spokesman later described him as being in serious condition.
"Our thoughts go out to the individual and hope that they will be okay and make a full recovery," the TriMet spokesperson said.
The TVF&R tweet included a photo showing emergency personnel gathered around what appears to be a person lying next to the tracks a short distance past the pedestrian crossing at the end of the Beaverton Transit Center platform.
Shuttle buses will serve stops from Elmonica/SW 170th Avenue to Washington Park, TriMet said, and residual delays should be expected throughout the rest of the line.
A subsequent tweet from the agency mentioned that bus Line 20 was also disrupted due to "police activity at Beaverton Transit Center," with no service in either direction between the transit center and Southwest Barnes & Cedar Hills Boulevard.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
