VERIFY: Why is a tax included on my Winco receipt?

The tax doesn't cover basic groceries, medicines and health care services.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A tax is showing up on some shoppers' receipts in Portland, leaving many KGW News viewers confused, because Oregon has no sales tax.

We set out to Verify: Why is a tax included on Winco shopping receipts in Portland?

The 1% tax our viewers have noticed on their receipts is due to Portland's clean energy tax, according to an employee at the store's SE Powell location.

It was passed by voters last year, and mandated large retailers with national revenues exceeding $1 billion, or Portland-area retailers with sales exceeding $500,000.

The tax doesn't cover basic groceries, medicines and health care services.

Winco is taxing the customer based off the items they purchase, while other large retailers in Portland may be increasing prices of those goods.
