VANCOUVER, Wash. — A 9-year-old boy on a bike became pinned under a school bus in Vancouver on Tuesday morning, and Vancouver Fire Department crews had to use special tools to lift the bus up to free him.
The boy appeared to have only minor injuries, but was taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to Vancouver Police Department public information officer Kim Kapp.
The boy is a student at Ellsworth Elementary and had been riding his bike to school, an Evergreen Public Schools spokesperson confirmed.
The fire department was called at around 7:15 a.m. to the intersection of Southeast Ellsworth Road and 10th Street, and the crews found the boy tangled with his bike under the rear axle of the bus, according to the Vancouver Fire officials.
A ladder truck and technical rescue team responded to the scene, along with Vancouver Police Department personnel to provide traffic control. The fire crews deployed hydraulic tools to lift the bus and built wooden block supports underneath to hold it up while they got the boy out.
Vancouver Police Department Public Information Coordinator Kim Kapp said the boy collided with the bus at the intersection. The bus had a green light at the time, she said; the driver was not at fault and has not been cited.
Evergreen Public Schools said they'll have counselors available to students and staff at the boy's school on Tuesday.
