Secret garden in Vancouver offers neighbors a quiet escape

The small park built by a Washington couple is a place of peace in a stressful time.

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Next door to Gene Wigglesworth’s Vancouver home, you’ll find “G-Squared Park.” Invisible from the street, Gene says you can see over 40 species of trees and flowers once you step in from the sidewalk.

“We’ll call it a secret garden,” he said.

Four years ago, Gene and his wife Grace bought the lot from their neighbors and immediately began to turn it into their own little nature walk.

“We have a neighborhood gathering place…it’s a nice place that’s a bit of a refuge for people in our time and situation."

Besides the natural beauty, the couple has sprinkled art along the modest path. Gene’s mobiles hang from trees, and Grace has turned old window frames into beautiful paintings.

Other artwork, pavers, even benches have been donated by neighbors to help enhance this quiet escape.

“We created…the little library just about a year ago,” Gene said. It's a place where people can take a book, or leave one.

“This is a tough time, everyone has to find their own park in a sense.”

A refuge from the stress of things we can’t see, to take in the beauty that is all around here.
