LONGVIEW, Wash. - Two people were killed and one person was injured in a head-on collision Tuesday on Ocean Beach Highway west of Longview.
The Washington State Patrol said a vehicle was traveling east when the driver tried to make a pass over a double, solid yellow center line and struck a westbound pickup truck head-on.
The eastbound vehicle caught on fire, trapping two people inside. Both occupants died at the scene. Due to the fire, confirmations of the two occupant's identity have yet to be confirmed, troopers said.
The driver of the truck was later identified as Russell Gilchrist, 67, of Longview. He was flown in a LifeFlight helicopter to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver with a broken right leg and fractured vertebrae.
A trooper told The Daily News that witnesses rushed to the burning car but couldn't reach the people inside.
