VANCOUVER, Wash. — Washington investigators are looking into who threw cinder blocks and other heavy objects off a Vancouver overpass and onto cars below. Miraculously, no one was hurt, but at least three cars were hit.
“It’s very dangerous for someone to be exhibiting those types of behaviors by throwing things onto moving vehicles down below,” said Washington State Patrol Trooper Will Finn. “That debris has actually penetrated the hood of the box truck and damaged the engine. And we're being told that the vehicle is a total loss at this point."
Finn said this happened Thursday between 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. off the I-205 overpass at 4th Plain Boulevard.
WSP received a total of three reports within that hour. Trooper Finn tells KGW Vancouver police were called to help investigate and used a drone to scan the area when they arrived but were unsuccessful in finding a suspect.
“We don't have a description, but we did get one person that had called in, another motorist that witnessed the debris falling onto one of the vehicles, which was very helpful, so we know exactly what was happening up there," said Finn. “So, we do know for a fact that there was someone up there sending objects off the overpass.”
KGW reached out to two of the three vehicle owners for an interview but did not hear back.
However, a friend of one of the victims posted on Facebook, sharing pictures of the incident and stated, "If they would have thrown it seconds later, my family member may not be here today. We need to get these types of people off the streets. We don’t want them hurting others."
Finn told KGW that whoever did this could face several charges, including a Class C felony or jail time.
