VANCOUVER, Wash. — A man who was shot and killed by three Vancouver police officers Tuesday after he allegedly refused to drop sharp objects he was holding has been identified.

The Clark County Medical Examiner's Office on Thursday identified the man as 50-year-old William E. Abbe of Vancouver.

Abbe's cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds.

Police responded to a report of two men fighting at about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Northeast Stapleton Road and East Fourth Plain Boulevard. When officers arrived, one man was unconscious on the ground.

The second man, Abbe, was holding sharp objects, police said, and when he refused orders to drop them, three officers fired their weapons.

No officers were hurt.

The officers were later identified as Sgt. Jay Alie, 53, Officer Sammy Abdala, 52, and Officer Sean Suarez, 36. All three are on critical incident leave, which is standard police procedure.

The Clark County Regional Independent Investigation Team is investigating the incident.
