BEND, Oregon — A Salem woman is now safe after reaching out to the National Human Trafficking Hotline and reporting that she was a possible sex crime and human trafficking victim. She was found in a Bend, Ore. hotel and a Washington man was arrested on multiple charges including promoting prostitution, according to the Bend Police Department (BPD).
On March 21 around 2:16 a.m. Bend police responded to reports of a possible sex crime and human trafficking.
A 31-year-old Salem woman texted the National Human Trafficking Hotline to report that she was being forced to engage in sex acts and was being held against her will in a room at the Red Lion Inn & Suites on Northeast Butler Market Road in Bend, Ore, according to the Deschutes County 911 Dispatch.
After not hearing from the victim despite many efforts to contact her, BPD knocked, announced themselves and order those inside the hotel room to open the door. The victim answered and officers removed her and took the suspect, 33-year-old Orland Smith of Vancouver, Wash. into custody, according to BPD.
In a later interview with the victim Bend police said she told them Smith punched her multiple times in the face and forced her to take part in sex acts with multiple men within the span of two days. Officers were able to find an online advertisement in addition to over $1,000 in Smith's possession, said Bend police.
Smith was arrested and facing charges of suspicion of fourth-degree assault, promoting prostitution, and was cited for a warrant involving a traffic offense in Salem. He is being held at the Deschutes County Jail.
If you or someone you know is a victim of trafficking you can call or text the National Human Trafficking Hotline on their 24/7 confidential hotline, 1-888-373-7888, or text 233733.
