PORTLAND, Ore. — Six cars on a Union Pacific freight train derailed in North Portland near the Steel Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

There were no injuries and no hazardous materials leaked from the train, according to Portland Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters were called to the scene, at North Interstate Avenue and North Thunderbird Way near the Steel Bridge, just after 4 p.m.

They found a Union Pacific freight train with 6 derailed cars. Three of the cars were lumber carriers, two were box cars and one was a tanker.

The tanker and other derailed cars were empty. The entire train was checked and no leaks or other issues were found, firefighters said.

Union Pacific rail officials are investigating the cause of the derailment and clearing the crash so the line can resume normal operations. The track is not damaged, they said.
