After 34 years, reporter and 'The Story' host Pat Dooris is leaving KGW

Dooris announced Friday evening that he'll be taking on a communications role in the office of incoming Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Pat Dooris, host of The Story on KGW, announced during Friday night's broadcast that he'll be leaving the station at the end of the year. He's been with KGW since June of 1990, and took over as host of The Story in March 2022.

Here's what Dooris had to say:

"It's been an amazing experience working at this station with all the talented professionals here for the last 34 years — more than half my life! I've always cared about Portland and Multnomah County, and anchoring this show has helped me develop an in-depth understanding of the problems facing our area. Now, I want to make a more direct impact.

"I'm going to work for the incoming district attorney for Multnomah County, Nathan Vasquez. I think he has a lot of great ideas, and I'm excited to help amplify them as his director of communications.

"I'll still be here for a bit, and The Story will go on without me. Thanks for watching, and supporting our show."

Vasquez is currently a senior deputy district attorney for Multnomah County, and he beat incumbent District Attorney Mike Schmidt during the May primary after a particularly bitter campaign waged over questions of leadership and spiking crime rates during and after the pandemic.

“I am excited and honored that Mr. Dooris is joining my team; he brings an amazing depth of experience and knowledge of the community," Vasquez said in a brief statement. "I look forward to having him help me highlight the amazing work that the men and women in our office do every day.”

Vasquez takes office in January, which is when Dooris will be leaving KGW and joining the DA's office.
