The jail says Maurice Haynes, 27, was released from custody on Oct. 28 instead of being returned to the Oregon State Penitentiary.

VANCOUVER, Wash. — A man serving a sentence in the Oregon State Penitentiary for criminal mischief was mistakenly released from the Clark County Jail after a court appearance on a separate matter last week.

Maurice Haynes, 27, was serving a 15-month sentence in Oregon with a release date of September 2025. He had been transported to Vancouver to appear before a judge at the Clark County Superior Court on Oct. 28 where he was released on time served.

Haynes was to be returned to custody in Oregon. However, he was released back on the streets Monday evening due to what the jail says was an error when he was booked.

"Unfortunately, the information to return him was not entered correctly at the time of booking, resulting in him being released," a spokesperson for the Clark County Jail stated.

On Sunday, KGW obtained a "release error" memo that was sent to local law enforcement last Tuesday.

"It was discovered this evening (10/29) that Haynes was erroneously released from the Clark County Jail yesterday", the memo reads.

The jail apologized for the error and said it was "reviewing and analyzing how this occurred to prevent this from happening in the future."

Haynes is described as 6-foot-3 and about 160 pounds with a tattoo on his inside right forearm that reads "Markisha." Prior to being in custody, his last known address was in Northeast Portland.

Anyone who sees him is asked to call 911.
