PORTLAND, Ore. — Northeast Marine Drive in Portland is one of the city's most dangerous roads.
On Thursday, transportation officials took action to try to make it safer.
Since January of 2017, six people have died on the stretch that will see the speed limit lowered from 45 mph to 40 mph.
The speed limit change affects Marine Drive 33rd and 185th. Crews were out on the 8.5 mile stretch Thursday morning replacing signs.
Marine Drive is one of 30 streets in Portland considered a part of the city's High Crash Network. They make up a very small percentage of streets, but they're responsible for more than half of deadly crashes citywide.
More safety improvements will come to different sections of Marine Drive starting this summer as well. They include a new traffic signal at NE 122nd, modifications to a pathway for people walking or biking from NE 112th to NE 185th, flashing beacons from NE 112th and NE 138th, and buffered bike lanes from NE 112th to NE 122nd. Rumble strips are also planned.
For the next two weeks, speed cameras in the area will issue warnings to speeding drivers who may not know about the speed change.
But come June 13, speeders will get a ticket.
