5-year-old boy with autism found dead after going missing from Coos County home

After three days of extensive searching, the boy was found dead less than two miles from his home.

COOS COUNTY, Ore — A boy with autism who had been missing since late Saturday night has been found dead, according to the Coos County Sheriff's Office (CCSO).

The boy was reported missing on 6:27 p.m. on Nov. 9. The sheriff's office said that Josh McCoy and his mother took a nap earlier that afternoon, but she awoke several hours later to find him gone.

First responders arrived around 6:45 p.m. and "pinged" McCoy's cell phone, but it did not provide useful information. Deputies began searching the property, and an "attempt to locate" was sent out to other agencies. They ruled out a rumor that McCoy had been picked up by another family member.

The search continued Sunday, including draining a pond on the property, with deputies and several Coos County Search and Rescue volunteers, including K9 units, ground teams and drone operators. Resources from neighboring counties in southern Oregon and northern California were then requested as law enforcement continued to search, and they arrived Monday morning, bringing in several local fire departments to assist.

The search continued into Tuesday morning, which included help from Homeland Security, the FBI, Oregon State Police, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, other police and fire departments; and CORSAR, a search and rescue team made up of seven counties from Oregon and California.

Around 12:30 p.m., the boy was discovered dead around 1.6 miles from home. The sheriff's office didn't provide any other information about the circumstances of McCoy's death.

The investigation is ongoing, and no additional information will be released at this time, CCSO said.
