HILLSBORO, Ore. -- A lot of people were looking for their missing pets after Wednesday s Fourth of July fireworks.

The Bonnie L. Hays Animal Shelter in Hillsboro stayed busy all day Wednesday and Thursday with 33 runaway dogs and cats coming through its doors.

There was a 25 percent jump in stray pets this Fourth of July compared with last year, said Debbie Wood, the shelter s manager.

We're doing a lot of musical chairs and some of the dogs that are in our adoption program had been doubling up in kennels and hanging out with new buddies, so we can make room for the stray dogs that are coming in, she said.

A new feature on the Bonnie Hays website posts pictures and helps owners track down their lost pets. People who found an animal can also type in the license number and find the owner s phone number.

Wood said to check with your county's animal shelter and others in surrounding areas if you lost a pet.
