CANNON BEACH, Ore. – Authorities are warning beachgoers after several people reported shark sightings near Cannon Beach.
Lifeguards received a report of a shark sighting on Saturday, according to Cannon Beach Police Chief Jason Schermerhorn.
A paddle-boarder reported seeing the shark's mouth and feeling it bump her board.
"She was pretty shook up," said lifeguard Jesse Willyard. "When she was paddling in to catch a wave she felt something bump her board, and so when she looked back, that's when she says she saw the actual jaws, an open mouth and it turned away from her. Luckily it didn't get ahold of her hand or anything like that."
On Tuesday, state parks workers reported shark fin sightings in Cannon Beach and Seaside. Warning signs were posted in both areas and will stay up for several weeks, according to the state parks department.
The size and species of the sharks are unknown, and the reports have not been verified.
The parks department says more than a dozen shark species live off the Oregon Coast.
