PORTLAND, Ore. — Residents and businesses were asked to shelter in place as police search for a suspect who may be armed in Northwest Portland, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) reported. Though the shelter in place has been lifted, police are still searching for the suspect.
The suspect is accused of breaking into an apartment of someone he knew in the 1400 block of Northwest Pettygrove Street., around 11:15 a.m., according to police. The resident, who was not injured, said that the suspect, a man, had been armed with a gun and already fled the scene. The suspect has not been identified by police.
The investigation led officers to a group of tents in the area of Northwest 19th Avenue and Northwest Upshur Street, where they attempted to contact the suspect and were not successful. The Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were then activated and responded to the area at 1:18 p.m.
Officers contained the area and closed multiple streets, including Northwest Thurman Street between 18th Avenue and 20th Avenue, as well as Northwest Upshur Street.
Around 4:30 p.m., police said that the rent where the suspect was believed to be hiding in has been cleared, but they have not found the suspect. Tactical teams are now clearing the area.
This is a developing story and will be updated when more information is made available.
