ROCKAWAY BEACH, Ore. — A man died in a shooting in Rockaway Beach Thursday night, according to the Tillamook County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office and Oregon State Police (OSP) called it an "officer-involved shooting" but did not directly say whether a deputy or deputies shot the man.
The shooting happened in the area of North Juniper Street in Rockaway Beach. A deputy requested help while responding to an "agitated suspect" at a home, OSP said. The officers arrived and at some point during the incident, officers fired their weapons.
Officers tried to resuscitate the man but he died at the scene, the sheriff's office said. He has not been identified.
The sheriff's office and OSP did not provide addition information about what led up to the shooting and have not said if the man was armed.
No officers were seriously injured, according to the sheriff's office.
A witness who didn't want to be identified told KGW that she saw the man in the front yard of a home yelling profanities at deputies and throwing objects at them. The witness said the objects were large and heavy and may have been concrete paver blocks. At one point, the witness said she heard the deputies tell the man not to go into the house. The witness said she heard two gunshots about five minutes later, but did not see the shooting.
Sheriff Joshua Brown said there's no danger to the public.
An investigation is underway. The sheriff's office asked people to avoid the area while an "outside agency" takes lead on the investigation.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
