WASHINGTON COUNTY, Oregon — A recovery mission was underway after a man drowned in Hagg Lake on Saturday night.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol unit said they were called to the lake around 7:10 p.m. after a man reportedly jumped off a fishing pier into the water before surfacing and then struggling to swim before he went back under and didn't resurface.

The body of Vielman Mijail De La Cruz-Lopez, 32, from Cornelius, was located around 9:30 p.m.

The water temperature during search and recovery operations was said to be 80 degrees F.

The recovery effort involved members of the several agencies including American Medical Response, Forest Grove Fire Department, Gaston Fire Department, Hillsboro Police Department, Lake Oswego Fire Department Water Rescue Team, Lake Oswego Fire Department Dive Team, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue Water Rescue Team, Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Washington County Parks.

This is far from the first drowning at Hagg Lake over the years. Washington County implemented further safety measures after a family drowned there in 2014. The drownings led to a $4M lawsuit against the county for negligence. The suit was dismissed by a judge who ruled in 2017 that the county was exempt from liability due to Oregon law.
