WEST LINN, Ore. — Students, friends and community members came out to pray and support one another in front of West Linn High School Sunday night in honor of Cameron Tosado and Jaci Platt.
On Sept. 18 around midnight, authorities responded to a single vehicle crash along Southwest Borland Road, near Northwest Turner Road.
According to Cameron’s family’s GoFundMe, it was raining the night of the accident and they lost control of the car, crashing into a utility pole.
First responders found the 17-year-old couple in critical condition. Both are currently on life support. They have already undergone surgeries, and still have future surgeries coming up as soon as Monday.
Authorities have not confirmed what events led up to the crash, and community members who spoke at the vigil said they did not know as well. They said now, the focus is on Tosado and Platt's recovery.
Tiffany Murphy is one the vigil's organizers, and led part of the prayer Sunday night.
“Right now, things are very critical, and what they want is prayer. They want people to lift them up in prayer, prayers of healings, and there have been some miracles that have happened with their recovery, and we just want that to continue. And that's what we're here to do," she said.
“It's so important that community gathers for these kind of things, to stay out of isolation, to come together, to really believe in the power of prayer and prayer and numbers and how much of an impact that can make," she continued.
Murphy said more community-organized vigils are planned in the future, and said everyone is invited to come and give comfort and support.
Platt’s mom, Brandi Wismeth-Platt, sent a statement.
"It’s a miracle after miracle. It’s a miracle that these two beautiful souls were pulled out alive in such a horrendous accident. It’s a miracle that each of their bodies is working so hard to heal in their own way. Only God can do the impossible and make it possible," the statement said. "He makes the way when it seems there is no way. Your support and prayers help give us hope. God hears these prayers to work yet another miracle that is waiting around the corner. It’s a testament to how much Jaci and Cameron are loved by how much love and care they have received from the school from all the kids, staff, and parents which is yet another miracle."
