PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland police officers will wear masks while working in order to follow recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Police Chief Jami Resch said Friday that all members of the police bureau who have to physically be at work will wear cloth face coverings, surgical masks or respirators depending on the incidents they respond to.

Resch said officers will also be required to wear face masks in bureau buildings and vehicles with more than one person inside.

Officers arresting someone will be required to wear a mask and gloves if possible.

"Since the beginning of this pandemic we have realized the importance of limiting exposure to our community and to our members," said Resch. "Now that the recommendations have shifted in regard to face coverings, we need to ensure our members who cannot physically distance themselves have the protective gear they need to do their jobs. We must also keep ourselves safe as we continue to protect and serve our city."

PPB released a video with Chief Resch discussing the order to wear masks.
