Ebony magazine names Kann in Portland as one of top 45 Black-owned restaurants in US

Kann was the only restaurant from Oregon to make Ebony magazine's Eats 45, which features award-winning Black-owned restaurants and chefs from around the U.S.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Kann in Southeast Portland has been named on Ebony magazine's annual Eats 45 list featuring Black-owned restaurants and chefs across the U.S.

The restaurant is known for its creative celebration of Haitian cuisine, often marrying it with Pacific Northwest ingredients cooked over a live-fire. Gregory Gourdet's Kann earned the 2023 James Beard Foundation's Best New Restaurant award. Gourdet recently won the 2024 James Beard Award as "Best Chef" in the Pacific Northwest, marking his third James Beard Award.

Kann also was the only restaurant from Oregon to make Ebony magazine's annual Eats 45 list, which features award-winning places from New York, California, Georgia, Texas and more.

Gourdet opened Kann in August 2022. It took Portland by storm with a months-long reservation wait time to dine. Six weeks after its opening, Kann landed on the New York Times list of 2022's top 50 restaurants in the country. It also ranked No. 1 on Esquire’s best new restaurants in America in 2022.

If you're looking to check out the award-winning restaurant, best to make a reservation. The restaurant releases reservation times on a month-to-month basis.
