Portland business helps women with osteoporosis

At a Northwest Portland business, less is more when it comes to exercise equipment.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- At a Northwest Portland business, less is more when it comes to exercise equipment.

Great Bones offers clients a 30-minute, once-a-week workout on just two pieces.

“I’ve got severe osteoporosis, I’ve broken my back three times," said Lorraine Kistler. “This place has given me hope."

The workout begins on the Power Plate, which vibrates as the client stands or leans on it.

“The vibrations tell the body to make the muscles flex. It’s a reflex reaction,” explained trainer Martin Rasmussen.

After the Power Plate, the clients go to a bio density machine.

“The exercises on this equipment take just 5 seconds. We can get full muscle fatigue in that time because of how the body is positioned,” said Rasmussen.

“I can lift things better now and I’ve noticed my balance has improved,” said client Carrie Twist.

The individual sessions, which are each supervised by a trainer run $40 to $50 each.

Lorraine and Carrie have both been going to Great Bones for about a year.

“My last bone density scan showed improvement,” said Carrie.

I used to be bent over and this has made my life so much better,” Lorraine said.
