PORTLAND, Ore. — Although ladybugs are in their prime during the spring and summer months, you may start to see an influx of them in your home starting in the fall.

The red-and-black beetles are looking for a warm place to be, whether it's in leaves, wood and yes, homes and buildings. Ladybugs tend to stick together to hibernate, so if you spot one in your house, it's likely that many more may follow and cause a general nuisance.

Most ladybugs don't pose any major health threats to humans — but can have toxic effects to pets if eaten. The most common ladybug in Oregon, the Convergent Lady Beetle, is one that can be toxic, but only if ingested.

When threatened, lady bugs can also release a yellow, bitter-tasting liquid that can have a foul smell and stain surfaces.

Ladybugs are among the most common pests encountered in the Portland area around this time of year, along with spiders, boxelder bugs and stink bugs, Aspen Pest Control said.

All of them are in search of warm, protective places. Spiders tend to seek quiet corners of homes like basements and garages, while boxelder bugs tend to gather on the sides of buildings with lots of sun and attempt to enter homes to escape the cold. Both spiders and stink bugs can be difficult to remove once in the home.

Lady bugs often congregate in large numbers in attics and wall voids, Aspen Pest Control said.

How to protect home against pests

Aspen Pest Control's best recommendation to avoid pests in the home is to seal entry points. Inspect the exterior for any cracks or gaps in the foundations, doors and windows. Caulk or weather strips can be used to seal any openings where pests might enter.

Other recommendations include installing screens on any windows or doors, keeping food in airtight containers and avoid leaving pet food out for too long as it can attract rodents. Reducing clutter in homes can also help minimize potential hiding spots for spiders and rodents, as well as trimming and bushes and trees in the yard that may be a pathway for pest to enter the home.
