LINCOLN CITY, Ore. — Police shot a man at a motel on Saturday afternoon when they say he reached for a gun.

Lincoln City police officers were called to a domestic disturbance involving the man and a woman at the Motel 6 on Highway 101 at Northeast 35th Street after noon on Saturday.

Oregon State Police, who are leading the investigation, say the suspect, identified on Oct. 22 as 36-year-old Francisco Campos of Woodburn, had outstanding warrants, and the pair appeared to be associated with a stolen vehicle in the parking lot.

Anna from Lincoln City said she is shaken after the argument between a couple in a nearby motel room turned deadly.

“The couple that I was talking to earlier was arguing but then I had to go," said Anna. "That’s not my business, and I assumed somebody else would call the police if it got bad.”

Officers made contact with Campos in a room at the motel after 1 p.m., and they said Campos was not cooperative. Police said he had two firearms in his waistband and reached for one when he was shot by officers.

“The whole parking lot was full of police officers. I saw a couple people; they had a really scared look on their face,” said Anna. "They were in the room right next to me. If he was shooting a gun, bullets could have went bouncing everywhere. Other people could’ve gotten hurt.”

Campos was given first aid and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The officers involved are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation and have not yet been identified.

Per Lincoln County's Deadly Force Response Plan, the Lincoln County Major Crime Team was activated for the investigation.
