JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ore. — A couple from Idaho were killed in a plane crash in Oregon on Sunday, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
Dispatchers received a report around 7:40 p.m. that a plane had crashed in a remote area about 5.5 miles southeast of Madras, which is about 30 miles north of Redmond. Deputies and first responders found the plane wreck with help from power company officials. The sheriff's office determined the plane took off from Aurora in Oregon and was traveling to Idaho.
"Due to the extent of the crash, there were no survivors," the sheriff's office said.
Deputies did not immediately release information about how many people were on board the plane, but later said a husband and wife from Caldwell, Idaho, died. The sheriff's office has not released their names because they haven't been able to notify their family yet.
A line crew from Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), who were investigating a power outage, discovered the plane had struck a static wire and contacted emergency services. A static wire runs above transmission lines and protects them from potential lightning strikes. The outage did not impact any customers.
"We are saddened to learn of the loss of life. BPA will cooperate with authorities as an investigation moves forward," BPA said.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash.
This is a developing story and it may be updated when more information becomes available.
