The fire started around 10 p.m. Sunday in an apartment unit on the fourth floor of the Emmons Place Apartments, located at Northwest 18th Avenue and Irving Street in Northwest Portland.
Fire crews arrived and found smoke in the hallway of the fourth floor and water coming out from under the door of a unit. Inside, firefighters found thick, black smoke from floor to ceiling. The kitchen counter and cabinets were on fire and a ceiling sprinkler was active. Firefighters were able to put out the fire within about a minute.
Firefighters then searched the apartment and found an unconscious person just outside the kitchen. They carried the person out of the apartment and crews administered emergency medical treatment. After the person started to respond to the treatment, they were taken by ambulance to the Oregon Burn Center with what PF&R called "potentially life-threatening injuries."
Portland Fire said the fire was accidental. Investigators said the stovetop burner was on when firefighters put out the fire, but at this time, they can't determine with certainty at this time if the stovetop was what started the fire. Regardless, PF&R said people should remember to keep any items that could catch fire away from stoves and ovens. If a stovetop fire occurs, put out the fire by covering the pan with a lid or baking sheet.
Correction: An earlier headline on the article listed Pearl District rather than Northwest Portland as the apartment location.
